چکیده

Toxoplasma infect ion is c o m m o n in m a n and animals, ye t for 60 years the life cycle of Toxoplasma gondii remained unknown. Recen t ly a new form of Toxoplasma was found in the feces of cats t ha t had ea ten Toxoplasma-infected mice (for rev iew of earlier work see [1]). Th is fecal form is biological ly different f rom the known stages of Toxoplasma. While searching the feces of cats for a morphological equ iva len t of Toxoplasma, several cand ida te forms such as fungi, cysts of flagellates, and coccidian oocysts resembling those of Isospora fells, I. rivolta, and I. bigemina were found. Of these only oocysts resembl ing [. bigemina were cons tan t ly and q u a n t i t a t i v e l y associated wi th fecal Toxoplasma infect ivi ty. We will describe and character ize these oocysts and show by a series of m u t u a l l y independen t de te rmina t ions tha t t hey should be regarded as oocys ts of Toxoplasma got~dii. Some of these findings were briefly repor ted (2).

Detection of Toxoplasma gondii DNA by qPCR in the feces of a cat that recently ingested infected prey does not necessarily imply oocyst shedding

Detection of Toxoplasma gondii DNA in cat feces is considered indicative of the presence of T. gondii oocysts. This study aims to demonstrate that the high sensitivity of qPCR can lead to T. gondii DNA detection in cat feces in the absence of oocysts. A cat immune to toxoplasmosis was fed with a mouse experimentally infected with T. gondii. Detection of DNA of this parasite was performed by qPC...

Toxoplasma oocysts as a public health problem.

Waterborne outbreaks of Toxoplasma gondii have focused attention on the importance of oocysts shed in the feces of infected cats. Cat feces deposited annually into the environment in the United States total approximately 1.2 million metric tons. The annual oocyst burden measured in community surveys is 3 to 434 oocysts per square foot and is greater in areas where cats selectively defecate. Bec...

Detection of Toxoplasma gondii-like oocysts in cat feces and estimates of the environmental oocyst burden.

OBJECTIVE To estimate the analytic sensitivity of microscopic detection of Toxoplasma gondii oocysts and the environmental loading of T gondii oocysts on the basis of prevalence of shedding by owned and unowned cats. DESIGN Cross-sectional survey. SAMPLE POPULATION 326 fecal samples from cats. PROCEDURES Fecal samples were collected from cat shelters, veterinary clinics, cat-owning househ...

A serological and parasitological study of Toxoplasma gondii infection in stray cats of Mashhad, Khorasan Razavi province, Iran

The aim of the present study was to determine seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infectionin stray cats and correlation with oocyst shedding and IFN-γ concentration. From April to August 2016, one hundred fifty-nine stray cats were captured from various localities in Mashhad area. The blood and fecal samples were collected from each cat. The serum samples were examined to detect antib...
